Asbury United Methodist Church is a growing, mission-driven church in Birmingham. We exist to help people embody the way of Jesus, together. That happens in worship on Sunday mornings, but it also happens in classrooms, small groups, and Wednesday night gatherings where adults go deeper in their faith. We take discipleship seriously, and we need someone who does too.
You’ll lead the full adult discipleship experience at Asbury. This is not a program coordination role. You’ll bring vision, recruit and develop leaders, and build a culture where adults at every stage of life are growing in their faith and connected to community. You’ll report to our Pastor of Spiritual Formation and work closely with our clergy team.
– Ensure Sunday school classes, small groups, and community groups are healthy, led well, and equipped with relevant curriculum
– Recruit, train, and support leaders for classes and small groups on a regular basis
– Review all curriculum to confirm theological alignment across adult programs
– Plan and coordinate Wednesday night adult classes, small groups, and events
– Work with the Pastor of Spiritual Formation and clergy to keep college and young adult ministries thriving
– Oversee life-stage ministries, including Heart Connection, our senior adult ministry
– Build genuine relationships with church members, visitors, volunteers, and leaders
– Establish and lead a volunteer Adult Ministry Committee for feedback, vision, and ongoing support
– Follow up with visitors and new members to connect them to the right group or class
– Provide regular training and encouragement to Adult Ministry volunteers
– Track attendance, manage room calendars, and create registration forms using our church systems
– Produce the weekly Adult Ministry newsletter
– Oversee the Adult Ministry budget
– Maintain the Adult Ministry Resource Room, keeping curriculum and materials current and organized
– Oversee the upkeep of the Adult Ministry wing, including supplies and equipment
– Support and coordinate classroom technology, including TVs, projectors, and microphones
– Troubleshoot A/V during the week, on Wednesday nights, and on Sunday mornings
– Collaborate on major churchwide events including Lent, Advent, and Vacation Bible School
– Bachelor’s degree in Theology, Ministry, Religious Studies, or a related field preferred
– Equivalent experience in church leadership or Christian education will be considered
– Relevant United Methodist ministry credentials will be considered
– Experience in ministry leadership and Christian education
– Strong organizational and administrative skills
– Excellent written and verbal communication skills
You do not need to have all the answers on day one. You do need to love people and be serious about helping them grow. The right person for this role:
– Recruits and equips volunteers with genuine enthusiasm
– Communicates clearly and consistently with staff, leaders, and congregation members
– Stays organized without losing the relational thread
– Manages multiple programs and priorities without dropping the details
– Collaborates well with clergy and staff
– Shows up with flexibility and a proactive spirit
– Is passionate about adult discipleship as a core function of the church, not a side ministry
You believe Sunday school and small groups actually matter. You get energy from sitting across the table from someone who is wrestling with their faith. You want to build something, not just maintain it. You are not looking for a quiet back-office role. You are looking for a place where you get to help people become who God made them to be.
– Job Type: Full-time, Salaried
– FLSA Status: Exempt
– Hours: 40 hours per week
– Schedule: Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings required
